DIY: Banish Persisitent Dandruff!!

Sometimes, all it takes is a couple of ingredients from our kitchen to treat yourself to brilliant solutions to persistent problems.
Let us look at one of the most widespread hair related problem people over the world suffer from. DANDRUFF!!
I wonder how many treatments, shampoos, lotions etc we have all tried to keep this menace at bay. But how often have we failed when Dandruff has come right back with a vengeance?
So I'm going to share with you a brilliant tip my hair dresser gave me some time ago. And when I say brilliant, I mean BRILLIANT!!
Here Goes......
All you need is:
lemon
AND
ginger
Yes, reallyy!!
Only these two!
How to go about it?
Step 1:
juicing lemon    lemon juice
Step 2:
grate ginger  juicing
Step 3:
Mix the two together in equal quantities.
mix (No need to put in ice, though..)
Step 4:
Apply all over scalp with cotton. Leave for about Half an hour and...
Step 5:
Wash off with water, or shampoo if  you want.
Do this as often as you can, daily,if you can manage and see the difference. It definitely helped me!
Remember, lemon can dry the skin, and it is not meant for coloured hair.

What do the Key Ingredients Do?
  1. Argan: Argan oil is proven to make hair softer, silkier and shinier. It is the ideal hair conditioner, and it can even help to treat split ends and tame frizzy hair. Commonly used as a styling agent. It makes hair more manageable and adds a healthy, attractive shine to any hair style.
  2. Olive: Helps in treating dandruff, tames frizzy hair, adds shine and softens the hair shaft.
  3. Coconut: Fatty acids bind to the protein in hair and protect both the roots and strands of hair from breakage. Lauric acid is found in coconut oil and has better results than other mineral or sunflower oils when it comes to improving hair health. The natural antioxidants and nutrients found in coconut oil will deliver critical resources to improve your hair's softness and luster. Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E, vitamin K and iron and effectively eliminates dandruff while boosting hair growth. Contains both antifungal and antibacterial properties to protect against dandruff and lice
  4. Jojoba: The reason that Jojoba is such a great choice as a hair conditioner and moisturizer is that the molecular structure of Jojoba is very similar to the natural oil that is produced by the sebaceous glands in the scalp. This natural scalp oil is known as "sebum". It is a well-known fact that sebum is required for proper moisturizing of beautiful and healthy hair. Hair that has a good moisture basis tends to be more resistant to daily damage, tangles, dryness and split ends.
  5. Almond: Almond oil has several important nutrients including polyunsaturated and mono fatty acids as well as vitamins E, D, B1, B2, B6 and A. These are all helpful nutrients that allow you to grow strong, healthy hair strands.
  6. Camelina: Is an exceptional Carrier Oil.  Prized for its potent Essential Fatty Acid content, Camelina is used in a wide range of hair and skin care formulations.  It is particularly beneficial to those suffering from psoriasis or eczema, as it is about 10 times higher in linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid than most other Vegetable Oils.  This also makes Camelina an ideal ingredient for anti-aging serums, moisturizers, and other formulations.  Camelina Oil can help to repair damaged cells, increase elasticity in the skin, and protect hair follicles.

Price: INR 199/- for 100 ml.

The Oil itself is nearly colourless.

My Take on the Product:

I had been using some home-made concoctions for hair for sometime. When I saw the product in some print ads, I was tempted. I bought it on nykaa.com at a 5% discount. The list of 6 oils was very tempting!
It comes in a heavy golden coloured transparent glass bottle with a golden coloured plastic cap. It has a plastic inner cap where you need to poke a hole to pour out the product.
The oil itself is nearly colourless and has a fairly strong fragrance. My two little daughters loved it! Though I personally do not like strongly scented oils. I prefer the natural smells of oils.
When I looked at the list of ingredients,  I was quite disappointed. Its main ingredient seems to be Mineral Oil! All 68% 0f  it. The vegetable oils constitute only 30.7%, which also includes rapeseed, wheatgerm and sunflower oils!! So really what is the actual percentage of the 6 Special Oils in the mix??
The texture of the oil is very light, naturally because of the mineral oil. It absorbs into the scalp quite fast. It can make the hair limp, if more than a few drops are used.
I couldn't really tell if this oil has been more beneficial for me that my regular pure oils (not adulterated with mineral oil). I have used a few drops after shampooing my hair instead of a hair serum and it imparted a nice sheen to my hair and definitely prevented them from getting too tangled. Some of my friends said that they have also used it like a heat protectant.

Pros:
  1. Light textured
  2. Multiple uses: pre-shampoo treatment, after shampoo application to prevent frizziness, as heat protectant
  3. Floral scent
  4. Attractive packaging
  5. Exotic oils
  6. Affordable Pricing
Cons:
  1. Bottle too heavy and dispensing not too smooth.
  2. High percentage of mineral oil and other cheaper ingredients
  3. Low percentage of the 6 oils
  4. Had no perceptible effect on quality of hair.
Rating: 2.5/5 . The product loses value in my opinion due to the high ratio of mineral oil. After I finish this bottle I will go back to my home mix of pure oils.

Do share your thoughts about this oil with me. Take care.........

Product Review: Biotique Bio Mountain Ebony Fresh Growth Stimulating Serum:Intensive Hair Growth Treatment

Hello Beautiful!

I'm on a major product reviewing spree at the moment............ So today I am going to review Biotique's Bio Mountain Ebony Fresh Growth Stimulating Serum:Intensive Hair Growth Treatment

I has used this product many years ago and was most unimpressed by it then. However, I have recently rediscovered the product which is now much improved! I recently received a mailer from www.medplusbeauty.com (I am a regular shopper on this site) offering flat 30% discount on Biotique products. I had used some of their other products and thought it would be nice to browse through again. I picked up a few things (which I will review later) but I wanted to hit the INR 600/- mark to avail of their free shipping offer. So I gave this product another go.

And I am glad I did! This time round the product is so much better!

Product Claim:

Now to the real part. The product comes in a 120 ml plastic  semi-transparent bottle with a green screw-on cap. The mouth of the bottle has a a small hole to dispense the product drop-by-drop so you needn't pour it out in a bowl or anything. You can directly apply a couple of drops at a time to your scalp.... very convenient! The bottle itself comes in a cardboard box and has a security seal, so you know the product has not been tampered with.
For 120 ml, the product is priced at: INR 159/- but I got it at 30% discount (the offer was on at www.medplusbeauty,com)

Ingredients:

  1.  Neem: contain azadirachtin compound which gives neem its anti-bacterial, antifungal and anti-parasitic properties
  2. Mulethi: is used in hair care as it promotes the growth of hair according to ayurveda. It is also believed to help keep the scalp moist and hydrated. People with thinning hair can benefit from using licorice as it works on the adrenal glands.
  3. Pippali/laung: Said in ayurveda to be useful in controlling hairloss.
  4. Kusumbhi Tail (oil)/safflower:  it has the highest level of linoleic fatty acid available commercially. It is very beneficial to very dry flaky skin, excellent conditioner for dry scalp
  5. Pudina/Mint: Mint acts as a cooling sensation to the skin and helps in dealing with skin irritations, therefore good for the scalp too.
  6. Kachnar/mountain ebony: Has antiseptic properties and is said to promote hair growth.
My Experience with the Product:

When I first sniffed the product it was really pleasant..... the husband likes it too....... a minty-herbal-floral smell. The earlier product was very watery and runny, but this time it is more viscous. It is a deep burgundy colour . It is called a serum but its not meant for the hair shaft. It is supposed to be used on the scalp. the little hole on the top of the bottle is very effective and you can use the product directly from the bottle with zero wastage. I have a dry, itchy scalp with dandruff and the serum had an immediate cooling effect on my scalp. This pleasant sensation lasts till the scalp is wet, but the itchiness has definitely reduced. I usually apply the serum before going to bed and it definitely relaxes me. So the product most surely delivers on its promise of the scalp feeling "toned, exhilarated, free from dryness and irritation"!

It does not leave the scalp feeling oily. I don't have to wash off the product. It gets completely absorbed. I have seen no residue either on my pillow-case (I apply it before bedtime) nor on my comb ( I use a white one)

As for promoting hair growth........ hmmm...... I don't know... is it because of my aloevera gel treatment or this, I definitely have some new hair growth. However, the product has not led to any more hair loss......... So that is good!

Pros:
  1. Nice packaging
  2. Bottle dispenser is good and there is no wastage of product
  3. Reasonably priced
  4. Not too watery, a more viscous texture
  5. Non-sticky
  6. Does not have to be washed off or shampooed
  7. No residue
  8. Pleasant smell
  9. Cools and reduces itchiness of scalp
  10. I have definitely seen a reduction of dandruff
  11. Has not caused me any hair loss
  12. Easily available
  13. No preservatives
  14. Not tested on animals
Cons:
  1. Not sure about new hair growth
  2. Called a serum but does not control frizz, does not de-tangle hair
Overall Rating: 4.9/5 only because I am not sure of new hair-growth claim.

Will I buy this product again? YES
